recollections about myself: sad story from Tottenham

* a collection of stories and memories, in no particular order, from the life and times of John Clarke, who served as a policeman in the Australian Police Force, a great practical joker, he also had a great affinity with people and wildlife, was a champion swimmer, snooker player, loved golf, still loves fishing and is also an artist. I hope you enjoy his recollections - cheers, karin (his daughter)

I had great experience at Tottenham as a Police man in a one man station, and very little trouble with the population, the local coroner was the local Store Keeper, Malcome Gander.   But I did have a lot of very sad and very sudden farm deaths with headers, tractors, etc, and a very terrible 'kidnap, murder-suicede'.

I will tell about that:  This young man worked as a shearer in Totty and had a local shcool teacher called Diane Nonie Lambert as a girlfriend.  They both left town before we got there and broke up.  She was tecahing in Sydney - Mosman.  One day he rang her up and asked to take her to the movies and she agreed.  That's the last she was heard of in Sydney.

A couple of days later, I was washing the Police car on a Saturday morning and a bloke called Kevin came into the police yard and said there was a car burnt out in a stock lane a couple of miles out of town.  I went out and saw the car with what was left of 2 bodies on the front sear - one had a rifle all burnt laying across its lap and there was a can of petrol on the ground a few yards away.  It looked like a double murder.  I got the detectives out from Parkes and the Scientific out from Dubbo.  We couldn't figure out what  had happened.

A couple of days later, letters arrived to the Police and the dea girl's parents from the deceased man, explaining that if he couldn't have Dianne, nobody else would and that he inteded to kednap and kill her and himself, in their old lover's lane at Tottenham.
